World Civil Defence Day is celebrated every year on 1st March. This Day commemorates the entry into force in 1972 of the ICDO Constitution as an inter-governmental organisation and has two main purposes :

  • bringing to the attention of the public world-wide the vital importance of Civil Defence,

  • raising awareness of the preparedness for, and prevention and self-protection measures in the event of accidents or disasters

The World Days are an occasion for a variety of national events: symposium, conferences, radio and television debates, open days, disaster prevention and simulation exercises.

In 2009, the theme of the World Civil Defence Day was focused on: “Civil Defence: preventive information and communication techniques”

Themes for the years 2010 and 2011:

1 March 2010: “Disaster medicine”
1 March 2011: “Women’s role in civil defence”
